The Hitopdesha (From two words Hitha meaning Good and Updesha meaning Advise, thus meaning Good Advice) is a collection of fables and were supposed to have been used to teach young princes. The original tales are in Sanskrit and are attributed to various sources such as Narayana Pandit under the patronage of King Dhavalachandra and first manuscript could be traced to 1373. Abu Fazl, the minister of Emperor Akbar, had also translated the tales. Over the period of time, the various states and languages have added their own flavors to the stories.
